The REDi Dance Junior Company is a pre-professional company of Bronx-residing dance and theater artists, ages 13-19. As a member of the company, artists are given access to training in Latin Dance techniques, House and Modern dance. Artists are given opportunities to co-create and perform original choreography and text. Our work is social justice based in that it explores identity, liberation, self-care and healing practices. Our aim is to empower black and brown teens by providing avenues for them to exercise their creativity as artists and as active members of their community.
The aim of this company is to give youth the tools they need to practice leadership. The opportunity to create dance and present it professionally instills a confidence that carries over to all areas of life. Students learn how to trust themselves, take initiative and collaborate effectively. Our professional company will be the mentors, facilitators, collaborators, and role models in all processes. Below we list the 4 main components of our curriculum:
Dance Education and Experiences:
1. Self-care / Mental Health
2. Community Service / Community Engagement
3. Dance Training: Dance-Theatre / Latin Dance
4. Composition (creating and presenting choreography)
The Junior Company was founded during the Pandemic of 2020. We were called to take action and create a community of young people who can use art making to respond to the injustices in our society. Our work will contribute to the wellness of the Bronx community. We place healing at the center and believe in the power of creation.
